Primarily infrastructure focuses around roads, sidewalks, walkways, water, sewer pipelines, pump stations, & power. Currently, Chestermere does not treat its water and sewer as they are from and sent to Calgary for treatment.
A major change for Chestermere was changing how we do business with developers. Now developers had to invest and fund all infrastructure they impacted, needed or affected.
This saved the city huge money as we were no longer banking money for developers and getting no return on our money.
One significant advantage of working as a team with our developers was using their experts. They have more depth that what the City has access to.
Our first project, was the re-engineering of storm water that flows under rainbow rd, which allowed the twinning of rainbow rd south to proceed. The City and the developers saved $5m on this portion.
The City simply cannot afford to bank developers and building of infrastructure hoping years down the road the developers will still be around to pay the City back. Plus we tie up way to much capital, waiting for off site levies to be collected gradually from developers.
Though with this change, we also committed to streamlining development approvals that made sense. This does not mean simply letting the developers go wild. Residents must decide what type of the developent and residential density we want in Chestermere going forward.
